Before:
- What do YOU need to live a healthy, happy life? Generate a list of “needs” that answers this question. Rank these needs from most important to least important by using numbers – number 1 is most important. (minimum 5 needs)
- How different do you think your needs are compared to your classmates? To those of other cultures? (5 lines minimum)
- Peer share. Share as a class. Discuss.
-DEFINITION OF CULTURE: the accumulation of attitudes, habits, customs and traditions shared by a group of people. Those learned / acquired beliefs, values, etc. serve as a frame of reference / lens through which a group of people view and respond to the world.
During:
-What is a hierarchy? Handout Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – behavioral psychologist who, from his study of monkeys, realized that certain needs take precedence over others. What does each level mean? Notemake.
- T-chart: write the THREE most important parts of each level on the left. On the right, list the aspects of culture that support each level. Example: the cultural groping of families relates to teh love, affection and belonging needs.
After:
reflective writing: respond to the course essential question: “How do I define myself in relation to the global community?
- Pass out list of how a culture provides for individuals who make up that culture. Circle 5 and be specific – explain HOW / IN WHAT WAY your culture provides this for you.
- How does culture relate to a person’s individual needs? The needs of the family? Community? World? (10 line minimum)
